My weekend started with a early call from the mailman. He had a package for DH and me! No fabric with DH's name on it. The handwriting looked familiar: it was from DD Lotte and her BF!
Needless to say they had a great evening!

Meet Loesje!
She ‘s a down-to-earth, no-nonsense Dutch lady, feet firmly on the ground so she stands straight against the wind that’s blowing over dunes and dikes.Usually she wears jeans and a comfy shirt but because it’s your special birthday, she dressed herself up.She loves her wide-brimmed hat that protects her delicate skin from the sun as well as from the rain. She does her shopping on her old school bicycle, bags attached on both sides: practical and convenient!Oh, and tulips ARE her favorite flowers..
Blogfriend Pam is celebrating her birthday on the 11th of July and I decided to make her a bd gift. Ofcourse i told her in advance that I was sending something, 'cause i could no longer keep it to myself. I'm no good keeping secrets of this kind! A few posts back I should a sneakpeek of a "swap", but ofcourse that was no swap at all but a tiny piece of her present. I don't do swaps; I make something for someone I like or for someone who "needs" a gift. Just because.
I saw this pattern with a made-up character on Stephanie's blog and I shamelessy stole her idea!
(not exactly..I mailed her, ask for the book/pattern ánd her permission! Thanks Stephanie!)
Stephanie made quite a few 'garden ladies'. You'll find them scattered around on her blog.
Ofcourse I made a Dutch lady, called "Loesje"
She's mostly dressed in Dutch fabrics and even pieces from traditional Dutch costumes.
I also made Pam a pincushion. She surely needed one! I made her 2, but forgot to take a pic of the second one (a cupcake) but that's on Pam's blog.
Pam loves her gifts, but I had just as much fun making it! Her kind words on her blog really touched me, but it was all my pleasure Pam!!
Last sunday we helped DD move in to her new place. BF had his birthday last monday and for the place, birthday and them living together DH and I bought them a "museum". being both archeologists, they have old stuff from the Roman era, Middleages etc. Bits and pieces that no one ever saw 'cause it wasn't 'displayed".

Dissapearing 9patch is popping up on several blogs. I noticed them, rather liked them, but i didn't know the pattern, nor did I get where the name came from.
Finally, last week my curiousity was tickled enough to google 'dissapearing 9patch" and immediately there were a few tutorials. I read those and got something that's called an "aha erlebnis" aka I "saw the light"!! As I told before I'm a machine piecing dummy. Machine piecing is sometimes oké, but never 'fun". Since I hardly ever do it, I'm, ofcourse, NOT very good at it. I made a plaid/star quilt on the machine and there's not one star that hasn't chopped of points. Hate that! I also hate non-matching seams.
But this seemed so easy that I wondered:... could I..? I pulled out my sewingnotions fabric that was waiting for a pattern to come along, plugged in the Husquavarna ánd my iron and gave it a try. First problem: I had only 6 different fabrics. Could I do it with only 6?
Well, YES! I could!! This was só fun to do that I couldn't stop sewing. Unbelievable that it took so long for me to discover this pattern. I have some tulipfabrics that would be perfect for this. And motorcyclefabrics.. Clearly I'm not done after this notions wallquilt. (that still needs a border:)
Not once the seamripper was necessary:) Look at those MATCHING seams!! And they kept on matching every time!
Now I'm wondering: what will happen if I cut the blocks not only horizontally and vertically, but diagonally as well??Perhaps I'll try that in EQ..

We spent the weekend at DD's new appartment working. Layers and layers of old wallpaper were removed and I personally put new wallpaper on the walls in bedroom, livingroom and quilt/studyroom. That's what you get when you're the only one that is able to wallpaper :)
DD choose lowbudget paper that needs to be painted over. As you can see, she took that painting job seriously and she did not skip a single corner!!
In the quiltroom to be, they had, what DD calls, "fun"wallpaper. It was not that much fun to put it on the wall though! DH had a supervising task and looked carefully if I did it the way it should be done. The brown wall still has to be painted white.
There were at léást 4 layers of old wallpaper on every wall. Even above the tiles in the toilet. Lotte originally wanted to paint that but i've decided to get it all off and put the leftover "fun'wallpaper on those walls. Together with a new black toiletseat, a new white shelf etc. it'll be looking great! Lots of house make-over tv shows have a "special project" and I made the toilet mine :)
Next weekend we're going to do some more painting, finish the 'special project' and do what still needs to be done. Friends that offered their help, will be asked to do the actual moving. I rather paint than carry heavy furniture and boxes!!
Before we drove to the new place, I got a textmessage:
Mum, I have: food and drinks, toothpaste, showergel, coffee, cleaningstuff, garbagebags, toiletpaper, mugs and glasses, plates, forks and knives, chairs and balconytable, showercurtain, airbed and a quilt so you don't have to bring all that.....
The showercurtain was red with polkadots and she brought the quilt SHE made (instead of the one I made for her) for me to sleep under. I think, no I KNOW that's love! Doesn't that feel much better than a mother-of the-year award?!

DD Lotte has found herself (and her BF) an appartment! Besides livingroom, kitchen etc. it has a tiny guestroom and a quiltroom attatched to the livingroom. Now she needs to find a way to bring that to her BF. HE thinks it's a study/computer room, poor soul.
There needs to be done a lot of painting, wallpapering and so on, and I signed that part of the parental contract conscious and willingly. DH and I will go there tomorrow, do what needs to be done, stay the night and do some more on sunday. BF can live with yellow painted doors but DD likes cream a lot better. The walls will be white instead of brown so it'll all be bright and light when we're done!
(I hope I'll win the mother-of the-year election with this. My kids promise me such an award time after time but somehow I seem to loose all off my gathered points shortly before they announce a winner. Mostly because I freak out when I open their bedroom doors and see the mess they made. )
This pic is taken from the livingroom, facing the quiltroom to be. (and a computercorner for BF:)
The last week or so I've been working on a secret swap. Since it's secret I can only give a sneak peek. I 'm not sure if the lady at the receiving end reads my blog but better safe than sorry!
I mailed the package today. As soon as I hear from her, I'll show you the rest!
Hope you have a nice weekend!!

On Gmail is a mail circling around, saying that you are tagged.
This is a scam and the name of the one that´s tagging you could be a familiar name. Don´t fall for it and delete the mail.

In the last post I showed the tin I bought and mentioned "collections". Tins are everywhere in my home and i'll show you some...
Most of them contain what it says on the outside: coffee, tea, chocolate milkpowder, cookies...and lots of different sweet sprinkles we Dutch like to put on our sandwiches..
Sewingroom (small) tins...
.....and the crackers are in a crackertin, soap for the dishwasher in a dishwashertin etc. I just don't like cardboard boxes!
Another (strange to some) collection are my unsharpened pencils. It started with just fun pencils I found here and there. Now I buy a pencil when on holiday. E.g on from the Tower of London when I was there, or one with "carpe diem"from Rome.
I also buy keychains from things/places I visited and use them as such or attach them on one of my (handbags) It's fun to see a red English telephonebox dangling again, when I use a totebag I haven't used for a while. Brings back memories from that fun holiday!
Last but not least my increasing collection of pincushions!
And don't we all collect fabrics????
Speaking of those: I got 6 emails and 2 comments about the Dutch fabrics and all 8 of you would want to swap some. Well, hope you understand that swapping with 8 people is a bit too much. I can't pick 1 or 2 and ignore others, so the best I can do is give a link where those fabrics can be bought (it's in English or English can be chosen). I myself am a member of their Dutch fq fabric club. Check this site http://www.minewood.nl/en-uk/

After cleaning house, doing some gardening, having Lotte and her BF over for dinner and having dealt with a lot of dirty laundry, DH and I decided it was motorcycle weekend. We drove to the province of Zeeland in the down west of the country.
First stop was at the lock: bridge was up and a lot of boats had to get in. It got rather crowdy inside and the lockmaster kept on shouting that everyone had to move to the front as much as possible. Easier said than done!
Next stretching-the-legs point was at this lake.
No Dutch mountains but this is how our dunes look like!
The effects of global warming compel the Dutch to make the natural sea wall higher to keep our feet dry in the future. Here in Zeeland the know all about that. The province contains of islands (actually peninsulas) and the last big flood was in 1953, known here as The Disaster. There was a lot of work in progress...
Did we drive past a quiltshop?? Ofcourse we did! I wasn't allowed to make pics inside but I did make one from the outside. Look at this lovely kitchenware they sold!

On Mother's day the weather was absolutely great and DH, DS and DD2 hopped on the bikes for a visit to Lotte. DS wanted to show his new bike and Lotte had to go to her MIL too and I didn't want her to drive through the country all day.
Lotte is the most thoughtfull child. She always brings little gifts for one of the family, sends cards etc. This is what she bought for me
At first i didn't know for sure what it was, but then i pulled his tail
(and grrrr Blogger flips pics again)
It's a tape measure! I have 3 now and find more and more cuties on the internet so I feel the need for a new collection coming up. I already have a big glass vase full of pincushions and I could add a new vase with tape measures.
DD Maren made a great pastasalad after we got home; she's the cooking and baking one. DH cleaned up after her in the kitchen.
I'm not sure what DS did on Mother's day. Perhaps he just loves me and that's it :)

A link on http://jovaliquilts.blogspot.com/ brought me to this, and at lest I found this very interesting to read!
Wishing everyone a Happy Mother's day
Today is Mother's Day. Mother's Day as we know it — where we celebrate our own mothers, with flowers, gifts, and cards — is relatively new, but annual celebrations to celebrate motherhood are an ancient practice.
The motherhood festivities have historically been in spring, the season of fertility. In ancient Egypt, there were celebrations to honor Isis, the loving mother-goddess, who is often shown in Egyptian art with the baby Horus at her breast, much like Mary and Jesus in later Christian iconography. The cult of the great mother-goddess Cybele began in Turkey and soon moved to Greece and Rome, and she was worshipped in some form for more than a thousand years. Her priestesses led wild celebrations, full of drinking, dancing, music, and all kinds of debauchery.
As the Roman Empire and Europe transitioned to Christianity, the Church set aside the fourth Sunday of Lent as a day to honor motherhood. It was a day to celebrate the Virgin Mary, and for people to honor their "mother church."
In the 1600s, England declared an official Mothering Day for that fourth Sunday of Lent. It was a time when families were encouraged to get together, and servants or workers were allowed one day off work to go see their mothers, since many working-class families in England worked as servants on separate estates and rarely got to see each other. Mothering Day was also declared an exception to the fasting and penance of Lent, so that families could have a feast together.
When the pilgrims came to America, they stopped celebrating Mothering Day, just as they stopped celebrating most holidays that they thought had become too secular.
Mother's Day was reintroduced to America in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe, who wanted to set aside a day of protest after the Civil War, in which mothers could come together and protest their sons killing other mothers' sons.
But the woman who really created Mother's Day as we know it was Anna Jarvis. Her mother had held Mother's Friendship Days to reunite families and neighbors separated during the war, and when she died, her daughter, Anna Jarvis, worked to proclaim an official Mother's Day to honor her mother and celebrate peace. And so on May 10, 1908, the first official Mother's Day celebrations took place in Grafton, West Virginia, and at a church in Philadelphia. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday of May as Mother's Day.
But Mother's Day became commercialized very quickly, especially in the floral industry, and Anna Jarvis was furious. She said, "What will you do to route charlatans, bandits, pirates, racketeers, kidnappers, and other termites that would undermine with their greed one of the finest, noblest, and truest movements and celebrations?" But flower sales and card sales continued to grow, and Anna Jarvis died in poverty and without any children of her own.
In the last U.S. Census, there were an estimated 82.8 million mothers in this country, and about 96 percent of American consumers spend money for Mother's Day.

I finally liberated myself! After reading Gwen Marston, Freddy Moran and Jan Mullen I thought I'd give it a try. I sewed (not by hand this time, another milestone!) liberated roses..
I started with a paperpiecing pattern. After years and years of fretting over every seam, you got to take babysteps. When I got to the 4th rose, I didn't sew the pattern lines anymore and the next flowers I made became more and more "freehand".
The pic is again a bit blurry (perhaps I got to take pictures NOT hastily), but you'll get the idea.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, Corrine was playing with her Kaffe Fasset plaids and stripes...
During my time off, I did not only make roses and spinning wheels, I also made good progress on this one:
And last I got to show a pic I took at the quiltshow we visited. Isn't this the best tin ever???Too bad is was waaaay to expensive and it held a pair of scissors that were too big but...it's still a great tin!

It has been a few days since my last post and I have been very busy! I also got a LOT of pics so I'll make 2 posts today. Grab yourself a cup of coffee or tea as I did!
First there was Koninginnedag or Queensday on the 30th of april. It's a national holiday on which we celebrate the Queen's birthday. In the midst of all festivities, some nutcake drove his car THROUGH fences and crowd in an attempt to hit the bus in which the Royal Family was at that time. I sat in front of the tv and watched in horror how people got hit by the car. 7 people died, lots were injured and the country was devastated. The queen appeared on tv later and she was almost in tears. Needless to say that I spent the rest of the day in front of the tv as more news of the attack came.
Nicer things on the 2nd of May. Corrine, Lotte and I went to the Open European Quilt Championship in a nearby town. I was looking forward to this day: it had been too long since the 3 of us went on a quilting trip!
The exhibition itself was dissapointing. Lots of wallhangings (I prefer quilts you can snuggle under) but worse was the way quilts were displayed: high on walls, poor lightning. It was almost impossible to take good pics and you couldn't see the quilts up close. Nevertheless......here are some of them!
Look what you can do with solids!
The very bad lightning is to be seen in this pic. It was "the best of show" and although the middle part is lighter, it was not THAT light.
Time for a break!!
..and back in we went!

Just got home from my last day at work, that is, for 1 and a half week. It's Springbreak and I sooo need some time off. No alarmclock, no companyclothes, yaaay! The only thing on my agenda in the European quiltchampionship on saturday the 2nd of May. I'm looking forward to that; it has been too long since DD, Corrine and I did something together.
For those who have some spare time on their hands too, I "found"some new-to-me blogs to check out.
http://loftcreations.blogspot.com/ from Stephanie. She's very creative! Scroll a page back and look at her "garden lady" Darla wallhanging. Further back are some more ladies.
http://quiltsalott.blogspot.com/ check the awesome headerquilt. She's very talented and works on an most amazing applique quilt. Again, scroll back to find it but you won't get bored doing so!
http://retro-mama.blogspot.com/ You might find some nice pincushions here. Look at her fabrics! All so bright and happy..
http://imquilternity.blogspot.com/ for kaffe Fasset fabric lovers!
And last but not least: http://nanasquiltsandmore.blogspot.com/ from Marne. She was in the Netherlands recently and if you check her april 3th post you can read how Dutch quilters and US quilters differ. Don't they really serve coffee there???
So, now you all have enough to do while I sleep in, sew lots of propellors, do some chores, visit DD, watch some tv, ride my motorbike, go to a quiltshow, buy fabrics there, read etc etc...
For those less fortunate: I'll be thinking of you all:)
Before I forget: I noticed I got some new followers! 8 in total, so i'm on my way to become really famous in blogland. Pam: you COULD become my number 9 *lol*
Anyway: welcome and I'll try not to bore you too much!

Today I got 3 of the 4 books I ordered. I had high expectations, but am a little dissapointed with the Gwen Marston book "abstract quilts in solids". I thought it would be more inspiring, but most of the quilts in the book don't do it at all for me. I like the cover quilt, but I miss colour in the rest of the book and a lot of the featured quilts are in fact a bit boring..
The second collaborative book however is as great as the first one was. I do love Freddy Moran and her use of colour and bold fabrics are MOST inspiring to me!!! It makes my hands itch and makes me want to run to the nearest quiltshop and buy more colour. It even tempts me to get my sewingmachine on the table, so I can make more in less time. So that one is a great buy!
The third book is all about quilting. How a certain quilting pattern can change an appearance of a quilt and what the effect of different quilting patterns are on the same quilt. I take quilting as serious as patchwork, so this book might learn me a thing or two!
I ordered a 4th book in which there's a pattern for a wallhanging I NEED to sew NOW! But as always when you really want something right away......it's the last one to arrive. It'll probably take a lot longer to get here :(
This pic is for Lotte. She bought me a few tulip bulbs and I want to show her how they look now.
Leuk Lotte: elke dag als ik thuiskom een verrassing hoe ver ze open zijn!

According to the local newspaper there was a rather elaborate quiltshow in a nearby village. The weather was great and Corrine and I had nothing in particular to do so.....
..we took our iron horses and peddled to an old farmers barn to the quiltshow!
The quilts however (with all respect to the quilter) were not that special. In fact I think that Corrine's and mine are just as good. Ah what the heck: ours are "better"!
Funny thing (or actually annoying, I'm too nice)was that the quilter's husband showed people around and gave comments on the various wallhangings. He clearly didn't know anything about quilters but that what he got from his wife. he commented as if he was in a fancy artgallery. I wanted to toss a bucket of cold water over him. Luckily we came across this and that calmed me down..
This happend to be the booth of someone we knew. She teaches how to felt and has fabric thingys too. Her display looked very nice!
After seeing the quilts we sat outsite with a view over farmer's fields, a lovely cappuccino and the
felt lady gave me this :
(I'm going to use it for something Dutch that's in my mind)
I also met an old friend. We quilted together for 10 years and then she dissapointed me só, that we're not on speaking terms anymore. She stopped dying her hair, turned all grey and looked like 63. (she's my age and that's NOT 63. ) I hardly recognized her (evil grin..)! We exchanged politely "hello".
All in all a very laid back, very pleasant afternoon!

I hope you all had a Happy Easter. Ours was nice and quiet. Good friday and Easter saturday evening I spent in front of the tv. I saw Jesus die 4 times and the resurection once. I watched The passion Of the Christ (too much!) 2 other passion movies and THE best: Jesus Christ Superstar. I know all the lyrics by heart (and so does Lotte:) so I sat on the couch singing out loud and meanwhile quilting. DH, DS and youngest DD all left the building..
Since the weather here looked and felt like summer I first did some gardening. I'm not a gardener at all, but the weeds were growing faster than the regular, wanted plants. My legs ache now from bending over (not a pretty site I know) and from using muscles I forgot I had.
Today I did some laundry
This means that....tadáááá: I finished quilting the red and white quilt. (I'm still waiting for binding fabric so I'll show it when it's all done and labeled.) So now I can go back and play with dots and spots fabrics.
I set up a working space at the garden table.
During a long lazy afternoon I watched DH polish his bike, DS come back from an Easter Popfestival (he took a bath and fell asleep in the tub. I had to check on him every now and then to see if he was still alive ....) and youngest DD go out on skeelers.
I washed and ironed fabric, folded fabric, cut it,( got a little sunburned), sewed some propellors and sashings and this is it so far
Don't know exactly what I want with this project except that it has to become bedsized. We'll see where the dots and spots 'll take me!
Tomorrow it's a working day again :( Only 2 weeks though 'till Springbreak! Yaay!

Neighbourfriend Corrine finished a quilt! It's for the daughter of another friend who loves princesses and fairytales.
The paperpieced fairy came from a book by Maaike Bakker, called "Spellbinding Quilts" and from there on, Corrine just added borders untill it was big enough.
Corrine is a skilled quilter: look at those tiny, regular stitches. Boy, did I teach her well! *lol*
All she needs to do is add a binding. I'm afraid I passed the "I hate bindings" thing on too, together with the love of handpiecing and handquilting! Ah well, you can't win them all and 2 out of 3 is not bad at all!
